Name: Sylphillae
Challenge Rating: 2
Submitted by Tul

Description: Sylphillae are diminutive creatures, resembling fleas in size, with males adorned in hues of vibrant red contrasted by sapphire-hued limbs, while females bear an inverse coloration. Their tiny forms are almost imperceptible to the naked eye, yet their presence is often betrayed by the crackling aura of static that surrounds them.

Cultural Significance: Though seemingly insignificant, Sylphillae hold a peculiar place in folklore, often depicted as mischievous sprites that delight in causing chaos and annoyance. Their ability to generate intense static electricity has earned them a reputation as pests among both humans and livestock alike.

Habitat: Sylphillae are found in a variety of habitats, ranging from lush meadows to dense forests, wherever their preferred hosts reside. They are particularly drawn to areas with high moisture content, as it enhances their ability to generate static electricity.

Size: Sylphillae are tiny creatures, measuring no larger than a common flea.

Biome Role: Despite their small size, Sylphillae play a significant role in their ecosystem by dispersing seeds and plant matter as they cling to the fur of their hosts. However, their propensity for causing annoyance often outweighs any potential benefits they may offer.

Life Cycle: The life cycle of Sylphillae follows a typical insectoid pattern, beginning with egg-laying females depositing their eggs in the fur of their hosts. Once hatched, the nymphs undergo several molting stages before reaching adulthood, during which they continue to feed on the static energy generated by their surroundings.

Resources: While Sylphillae themselves are not directly exploited for resources, their presence can have indirect effects on their ecosystem. The seeds and plant matter that cling to the static-coated fur of their hosts may contribute to the dispersal of plant species, albeit inadvertently.

Notable Features:

Static Aura: Sylphillae possess the ability to generate intense static electricity, causing creatures in their vicinity to develop puffy, static-coated fur. This static charge also attracts more Sylphillae to their hosts, exacerbating the annoyance they cause.

Vibrant Coloration: Males of the species exhibit hues of vibrant red, contrasted by sapphire-hued limbs, while females bear an inverse coloration. This distinct coloration aids in identification and differentiation between the sexes.

Thunderoc
Challenge Rating 6

Description:
One of the fastest creatures of the skies, the Thunderoc is not to be trifled with. It has the appearance of a bird, though its size can rival even those of Elder Dragons. Its feathers are a golden yellow that seems to blend in perfectly with the flash of lightning. The tips of its feathers seem to dance with electricity at all times, making the Thunderoc quite easy to spot at a distance.

Thunderocs are incredibly rare creatures that tend to travel all across the world. They are most often spotted during large thunderstorms, though it's not unheard of to see a bolt of lightning on a clear day as it dives for prey.

These birds hold themselves with an air of superiority. They lack the intelligence of playable races… but are still smart and powerful enough to be, or contend with, the apex of their biomes. They tend to fight with other large creatures over prey.

Cultural Significance:
These birds are revered by some cultures and feared by others. Their presence in a populated area can be seen as divine punishment as its presence is usually associated with dead livestock. Others welcome its presence in the skies as thunderstorms are associated with rain.

Habitat:
These birds can live basically anywhere. They tend to nest around areas with frequent storms or around flora/fauna with electrical properties. The Whispering Yew, which is native to forests, is a common tree to breed and raise children around.

Size:
They are born the size of dragon whelps and can grow to be as large as an elder dragon.

Biome Role:
It's unclear what purpose they serve. Scholars think they help regulate the power of thunderstorms, either increasing or decreasing intensities as they see fit. They also have a symbiotic relationship with lightning-themed flora.

Life Cycle:
Thunderocs only mate during thunder storms which is a sight that most consider worth seeing. Multi colored lightning bolts shoot off, lighting up the skies for miles around. They lay only a handful of eggs and are abandoned shortly after birth. Those that survive will grow to adolescence at 50 and adulthood at 100. They can live to be 300.

Resources:
Their feathers have electrical properties which alchemists can take advantage of.

Their bones are twice the hardness of steel which can be worked with grandmaster crafting.

Notable Features:
  • See Beast Magic, below:
