Summer 40 123

Caelum landed in the center of town, not thinking much of the act. He flew basically anywhere he needed to go and the aelves that were used to his presence wouldn't give much more than a passing glance at him. But he wasn't among aelves today. He'd come to one of the largest human cities there were in AElheim, so it was no surprise that many heads turned and people murmured as he looked around.

"Erm, Hi," Caelum said with an apologetic wave. He briskly pushed his way through the foot traffic, thinking that next time he would land somewhere a little less noticeable. It'd actually been quite a long time since the dragon had mingled properly with the humans. It often surprised him just how many of them there actually were, since he didn't exactly see them densely grouped where the aelves lived.

He happened upon a park where he sat down and tried to focus a little bit. He hadn't just randomly happened by, he was here for a reason. He was looking for people fertile enough to recruit for his little project, but he wasn't used to there being so many people around. On top of that, humans were much more fertile than aelves so he was getting a bit of sensory overload.

He was wearing a black tunic and wouldn't outwardly appear much different than a human, aside from some aelven qualities such as a lithe body and eyes that would hint that he was a dragon. That was, until he pointed his mouth to the sky and let loose a small stream of fire which helped him pull his thoughts away from fertility for a moment.

"Get a grip," he told himself, "you've only just arrived. Damnit, you should have brought Flora… she would have kept you on track."

It wasn't every day that someone fell out of the sky and shot fire into the air. Abraia was curious so she followed him even when he walked to the park. She didn't know what to think of him. Common sense told her to go about her day. The curious crafter's mind of hers egged her onwards.

"Hi there." She came into view with a light step and a stern look.

"I couldn't help but notice flames came forth from your mouth. Be you some sort of mage, magician?" She had a playful tone, spoke quickly, examined thoroughly. The man looked human, partly elven. Partly more? She stepped closer still.

"Or be you in possession of a magical item? Artifact, to be specific. I happen to know a thing or two about them, could even make one if you'd the coin to trade." She pressed, seeing a potential customer in every person who wielded magic.

Caelum had just relaxed back onto the bench he'd sat on when someone stepped in front of him. It was a woman, he'd guess around their late teens. Her presence didn't do his insatiable hunger for fertility any favors. She appeared to want to know about how he'd shot flames from his mouth and whether he'd be interested in buying anything. He thought about waving them off but she was pretty and he'd never turn down the opportunity to chat with a pretty woman.

"Slow down, slow down," he said with a genuine smile. He leaned forwards and waved his hands. "I'm a dragon, believe it or not. I just take this form. I govern Luxium so I can breathe fire and light as I see fit." He focused a little and emitted a small stream of flames from his lips that only extended a few inches but his point was made.

"And hmm, you deal in magical items, you say? Care to sit? Or perhaps take a walk with me? I may have use for someone with your skillset… granted I know very little about that subset of arcana." He rubbed the back of his head hesitantly. He knew he ought to stay focused on why he came here but he supposed a short conversation would be alright.

He looked around to see that people were looking at them, though none thought they needed to approach. Caelum glanced at them to see them turn their gazes away. He sighed then got to his feet. "Actually, let's walk and talk. Then I can kill two birds with one stone. I'm actually here to look for fertile humans for a project of mine. I'm not going to make any progress just sitting around." He realized after speaking how odd his statement might have sounded.

Abraia took a cautious step back when the man spewed more fire from his lips. He was full of surprises. The good kind of surprises.

"A dragon? You're kidding?" she laughed. His face did not betray any hint of betrayal so she stopped laughing abruptly.

"Yes. Magical items of many varieties, but only artifacts. Ensorcelling and alchemy are my specialties. If a dragon has money to pay, I am happy to serve."

"Walking? Sure. Where to? How do you look for fertile qualities? I know much about magical items but I do not know if such a thing can be found with an artifact. I will take you to my boss, he may be able to help." She tried to lead the way as they walked. She wanted to take him to the shop where she worked. The elf there would be happy that she found a customer but she did not know if he could help. If she did not know how to do it then her inferior elven boss would not know either. She had given up on selling the dragon anything already but she still wanted to learn more about him.

"I'm not joking, I'm truly a dragon," Caelum said tiredly. This was a conversation he had all too often with humans. He learned to avoid explaining things in an overly complicated fashion. "I've got money, no worries about that," he continued with a chuckle, "and I look for fertility by using my dragon magic. It's as simple as that. I can look at someone and just tell how fertile they are and people who spend time near me find that their fertility increases."

He took a deep whiff and could even smell the fertility coming off of Abraia, assuming there was any. Being among so many humans was turning out to be druglike after so much time away. "So," he said as they walked along, "I don't really need help finding it. Sorry if I misled you. I'm thinking about starting a little community to the north and was thinking I might need a crafter's help getting some things running. I don't know exactly what your sort can do, however…"

He motioned for her to stop, because he really did not want to get dragged into a shop. "I'm also a druid, so I can do the woodwork but I will need help with metal working and oh, I don't know, magical items that can produce water, for example. I'm in the very early stages of planning and I've got someone else planning the business side of things. Sorry if this is all sounding a little vague, but I really could use all the help I can get." He offered a small smile.

"To be honest, I wasn't planning on getting crafting help from humans. I'd planned on using aelven labor… but now that I think about it, there's no reason not to consider humans." He put a hand on his chin and rubbed it thoughtfully. Perhaps talking to this woman would prove fruitful afterall.

Abraia remembered hearing something about dragons and alchemy. She never paid much attention since she never cared to meet a dragon. They were like elves, Powerful, distinguished. The kind of creature that could eat anything they please.

She was certain in the pit of her soul that dragons would not hesitate to eat every last one of them, true or no. So why did this one look semi human?

"You are a strange dragon." She dropped her upbeat personality to be replaced with her serious tone.

"You come here to look for fertility, okay let's say I believe you. You also want to start a community with these presumed fertile humans. If I put two and two together I have to assume you are planning to breed humans. You are no different than the elves that seek to pull every drop of value from us. You may look it, but you are no human and I will not help someone like you."

Caelum was taken aback by the woman's sharp tone, even more so by her sharp mind. Though he hadn't tried to hide it in the least, she'd figured out his plans far before he'd expected. He'd never thought to be particularly secretive about his plan when discussing it with the aelves – to many of them it made perfect sense. But… he could now see how a human might see this as a terrible thing to do. It was still unexpected to see a human who was keenly aware of just how badly humans were treated in the grand scheme of things.

Half of him wanted to just drop the conversation and split ways right then and there, but he realized that he was going to have to get good at discussing this topic if he ever hoped to recruit people to his cause. The trouble was, he wasn't the persuasive type in the traditional sense. He was more apt at 'scaring them' to get what he wanted.

"Hold on a moment," Caelum said cautiously, "I could have phrased all that better… please, give me another chance to explain. Yes, I want to breed humans but it's not at all like you're imagining. I embody the people of aelheim, humans included. It's the only reason I can take this form. I do care about humans, truly. The community I want to build, I've named it 'Paradise' and I fully intend for it to be one."

He scratched his head while he replayed the words in his head the continued, "I admit, I do need to work on my pitch. You're actually the first human I've spoken to about it that actually lives among other humans. Now that I think about it, your perspective is invaluable… perhaps we could talk things over some drinks? My treat?"

The keen minded lass heard him out but she did not look to be impressed.

"Some might call this city a paradise. It can be, in its own way. It does not change what the elves do to us and how we only exist to serve them. I speak to you plainly, dragon. I would dare not have this conversation with an elf but you claim to care for humans so you should know that what you plan to do is wrong."

She was drawn to the plan but for not the reasons the dragon thought she was.

"Let us discuss. We can drink here." She made a quick turn into an inn. Within a few minutes she would not only be seated but have no less than five drinks in front of her. She ordered way too much but the dragon would have to pay to keep her listening.

She drank them one after another quickly and got drunk very quickly. When he was done talking she would tell him: "Listen dragon, I can help you but I will help with your little community but only because I want to make sure it is a paradise. I don't care how attractive you are with your fire breathing. If your intentions are impure I will take my ass right back home."

Caelum felt ashamed for but a moment when Abraia told him off. While he could see that humans were mistreated, he very much took the aelve's side on the matter. It was his opinion that the humans had much better lives under their rule than they could possibly hope to achieve on their own. Whether this was true or not, he wasn't sure… but until he saw humans doing just fine on their own.

He did value the woman's opinion, but one human speaking out wouldn't change decades of living with the aelves. He'd only met a few humans who admitted their resentment and one of them ended up mysteriously disappeared, so he thought highly of Abraia for even being willing to express her opinion.

"Alright, drinks it is," he said as they went into the inn. He didn't think much about how much the woman ordered. It was clearly to much for her and he wasn't going to go broke off of some alcohol. He passed the money to the waitress absent mindedly as he told her specifics about what he wanted to achieve.

He told her how he planned on making a nice living arrangement, how he didn't want the humans to have to work while they were pregnant, etc. He had a lot of ideas that might not have been believable, but he was sincere. He touched on how the children born would have extraordinary abilities and be able to afford great lives for their mothers.

When he got off his soap box the human told him her intentions. "Deal. I'll pay you for any work you do, no need to worry about that, and if you wish to leave I will personally fly you back home." Then it hit him that she'd called him attractive. "You think I look good?" He asked with a laugh, "or was that just the drinks talking?" He hadn't consumed any himself, knowing that he still needed to find someone who was fertile to join his cause.

The dragon told a compelling story. Abraia listened. She liked what he had to say even if it was naive. She thought of him as a little boy who wanted to do good but for all the wrong reasons. The more he talked the more she thought she had to be involved or it was going to be a disaster.

"Of course you look good. You're a dragon elf and human mixed into one delicious package. Fire. Flying. Druid. I bet you have no trouble getting women. That is why you think your plan is so good. Yes, you want hundreds of women all to yourself so you must be good at what you do. To think you can breed them all and give them paradise. Ha. Haha. Hahaha."

"I have one more condition then, dragon. So I know you won't doom these women to a fate of having terrible sex you have on more task. Prove to me that you will give these women a good time. Upstairs. Right now. NOW."

She was not going to take no for an answer.
