Raya sat at a desk with a paper laid out in front of her. She was jotting down memories of her past. They were vague. Dragon, glowing forest, an anvil. They were clues to who she was and to why she was an ornyo. They were not born for no reason; they had a reason for staying alive. The reason eluded her but she was getting a glimpse of what she used to be. She guessed she was a crafter and from her research the only glowing forests were in aelheim. She did not know if it was the right move to go back there. A map told her it was very far away. She knew only one person who was good at moving vast distances quickly. She came to Abraia with her notes to present to her and see if she could help her out. She did need lots of it.

Sjal was sitting and nursing her wounds. She had only just been initiated in terra not too long ago and she needed to rest and take it easy. There were so many battles planned in the near future that it wasn't funny. There was lots to read up on.

She would be found in her house. When she saw Raya outside her door she opened it and welcomed her in.

"Hey, you, come on in in," she said with a smile. "You remember anything about your past?" she asked, glancing at the notes that Raya showed her.

"So, you were from aelheim it looks like," she mused. It was worrying but she wasn't surprised that someone who died there had lots of regrets. Perhaps they realized how much they'd been taken advantage of?

She saw in the notes that she used to be a craftsman as well. "I knew a crafter in aelheim once. Her name was Abraia. Anyways, it's good to know that you used to be there because it's a terrible place. I used to live there too, you know. I had to escape. I'm actually only here in Jian because I was running away, but I don't think they're looking for me."

Abraia. That name struck a chord.

"That name. I think that was my name. Raya, Abraia, AbRaya." She rolled the words off her tongue a few times and it felt so natural and so right.

"But I cannot be certain. I must go back there somehow. Can you help me? I do not care if it was a bad place. I must know how I died and why. I want to exact my revenge."

She would not be defenseless either. She had power that she couldn't explain inside of her. She yearned for answers as it was in her nature to do so.

Sjal couldn't believe her ears. She had just seen Abraia earlier in the season. There was no way no WAY this was the same woman that she'd once seen as a mother. She shook her head with a neutral expression then said, "similar but I doubt you're Abraia. I don't think she would die and as far as I know she was happy with her life. But I could get you there… if you wanted."

She tapped her chin and said, "you're an onryo so you wouldn't be treated as badly as a human… I think. A noncitizen poking around looking for revenge doesn't sound much better, to be honest. I would hate to send you to your certain doom. However, I could send you to Abraia's workshop. Then you could at least realize that you're not her. Her shop is in one of the main human cities so there''s a good chance you lived in that city. The only other area I'm intimately familiar with is Paradise. My dad lives there, but I doubt you'd know about it. You'd only have been there if you were incredibly pretty, the kind that Caelum liked."

Raya said "I will ask for help getting there someday, but not now. If it is not a good place to go then I should not go immediately. I need a plan of some kind. Thank you for helping me and I will not forget your kindness. I like you Sjal even if you do seem to be as odd as I am."

Raya walked over to sit at the table opposite Sjal.

"Caelum sounds familiar too. Maybe everything you say sounds familiar because I'm unaware of my past and am desperate to fill in my memories."

She let out a sigh that said more than she could say. It was in the afternoon now but the city outside was still so busy.

"You trained so much today you should take some rest. I heard you got very injured recently and am glad to see you are still in good shape."

Sjal smiled and said, "I'm sure you'll figure it out someday. You only just arrived here. Take your time… you have years and years. I assure you the aelves aren't going anywhere and neither is Caelum." She smiled at the thought of him dying. She wasn't brave enough to try… surely it would be suicide to go there and start trouble. But nobody would expect Raya… maybe she could plot Caleum's demise.

"I'll take you up on your advice. I'll go take a nap." She yawned and laid her head on the desk and slept.

A strange noise came to disturb Sjal's peaceful sleep after about half an hour. She opened her eyes slightly and looked for the source of this sound. She looked towards the window and saw a bird pecking at the glass. She wondered if it was just a bird that had gotten lost or if it was someone who wanted to signal to her. She wanted to go back to sleep but just before closing her eyes, she saw something on the bird's leg. she got out of bed and moved to the window. She opened it and caught the bird. He then grabbed the message and unfolded it. It was an order. Sjal read carefully in order to know all the details.

"Looks like I need to go help teach some kids at the school. Want to come?" she asked Sjal.

She groaned at not having slept much but she quickly left the house. With the increase in casualties from war, many of her comrades, who were responsible for the education and training of young students at the schools, were not entirely available to fulfill their duties. It was her turn to take care of these young children, most of whom would soon be able to take their basic combat exams and graduate onto the next level of training. Sjal was surprised that these kids didn't learn anything she was taught was actually useful. It was like they were bred just to be cannon fodder.

With a little luck, they would pass and become formidable warriors. The program for the day was simple. According to her instructions she needed to ensure that the young students knew the basics of using weaponry which was, as her peers had come to know, was something she was skilled with. Suffice to say,, this task would be a walk in the park as far as she was concerned. However, she still had to succeed in making the young want to follow her lesson carefully, which was something entirely different from simply knowing how to aim with a sword. Who knew, maybe there was a student in this class who would be able to teach her something.

She pushed the door open with a small smile. About twenty students were already there, sitting in their places. Moving forward without a sound, she positioned herself with her back to the board, allowing her to take them all in with a single glance. For the moment, she preferred not to say anything and simply observed them. She then turned her face toward one of the windows, taking a look at the clear sky gradually settling over the city. Redirecting her attention to the future canon fodder, she realized she needed to start the class, but what could she say?

Yes, it might have seemed like a stupid question, but having twenty students in front of her for the first time was not so simple in the end. Well, well, well, she should probably introduce herself. Yes, that would be a good start. After all, they had never had her as a teacher before. No doubt, upon hearing the name, some would understand why she looked so foreign.

"I am your new instructor. I have other things to do so let's start. I want to see everyone work hard."
Sjal waited for the students to line up and start the exercise. Of course, she had noticed that a young rogue was deliberately teasing his classmates to make them fail. She didn't act for the moment, wanting the little rascal to understand for himself what was wrong with his behavior. After a while, the little rascal didn't understand, so she had to do something about it.

Raya said "Yes I will come." She had watched Sjal the whole time she had slept. They had a trust between one another.

At the school Raya was silent in the corner until one of the children became disrespectful.

Raya extended a tendril to move toward the little kid. It slithered like a snake toward its prey. Once it reached his ankle, she stopped the tendril, waiting for the right moment to strike. One of the students tried to aim at it, but the rascal started to scream to distract him, causing the youngster to miss his target. That was when Raya struck.

She took advantage of the fact that her target continued to scream, grabbing his ankle with her tendril and pulling him toward her to talk to him. Raya looked him in the eyes and tried to scare him, but the young man was not so easily fooled and made a face at her. In response, Raya slid the kid against a tree trunk and wrapped him around it with her tendril.

Sjal laughed at Raya's solution. It was certainly one way of scaring a kid shitless. She said nothing, simply raising her hand only when it looked like he was actually going to poop his pants.

"Alright, Raya, you made your point."

She blinked over and helped undo the kid's restraints. "Alright kids, let's throw your shurikens." She walked the kid away from the tree then shuriken struck the tree one after another.

"If you start your bullshit again, I'll liquidate you myself and skin you alive. Do you understand?"

The youngster, now thoroughly impressed and incredibly frightened, looked at the her and bowed. The rest of the training went as planned, and Sjal no longer had to take such drastic measures. She could finally devote herself to the others and help them. The training lasted a good hour before it was time to dismiss the students.

"Nice thinking back there," Sjal said to Raya with a smile. "I can tell you were great with kids in your past life."

After the school day some of the students and teachers had lingered on school grounds, wanting to rest and enjoy themselves. From time to time, Sjal observed the young children playing ball in the courtyard. But as she wandered around the school, she noticed a little girl sitting on a bench, away from everyone else.

Other children had found this kid too eccentric and weird, so much so that they were reluctant to approach her. But while he thought he had lost all her energy for the day, seeing this little girl alone had awakened her buried feelings. She remained in the shadows for a few moments, observing her. The little girl was watching her peers play ball, and, unable to bear being left out any longer, she quickly got up and approached the other children, hoping to join their game.

To her surprise, they accepted, and soon, the little girl was playing along. Sjal allowed herself a small smile, seeing that, in the end, this little girl was not so alone. She turned on her heels, when suddenly, she felt the ball roll to his feet.

The little girl had hit it too hard, causing it to leave the playing field and land near Raya. She gave the object a blank look when he saw the girl running toward him to retrieve the ball.

"Excuse me, can I have it back?"

Raya picked up the ball. Suddenly, the girl jumped into her arms, and she had time to move away from the tree to avoid getting slammed into it. The little girl stared at her with her hazel eyes, and displayed a wide smile, unable to contain her joy any longer. The Onryo looked at her, and after taking a deep breath, then let go.

"You're a good girl I can tell. Take your ball and go play."

She then fell silent, not wanting to say anything about her desire to join and play. She was an adult and felt that she had died an adult.

"Let us eat" She said to Sjal.

She went to a table, sat down, and waited for a waiter to come and take their order. Shortly after, a young man, who seemed to be starting out in the restaurant business, arrived at the table, and then asked the two diners what they wanted to have. The food came out quickly.

Sjal was glad to have company so it wouldn't be another lonely day in Emberfall. Getting food was a great idea! The village's second and third shift workers were just beginning to wake up. A quick dinner was probably what she wanted so she could go ahead and get a little bit of training in before she inevitably had to sleep.

"Hello chef."

"Hello Sjal," he responded, knowing her by her white hair. "You excited about your promotion to Shogun?"

"Of course I am. I want to be more than a shogun one day, actually. Anyways get me a big bowl of noodles with lots of stuff in it. I'm really hungry."

The man smiled and took Raya's order as well. There were a few customers in the restaurant despite the heat, and not all of them were from the nearby area. As Sjal patiently waited for food, the door opened again, and someone else came in.

The man walked toward the boss and gave him the fresh produce he'd carried over. Sjal recognized him because he had already been seen at the training grounds. She supposed he worked part time in the restaurant to help make ends meet. He looked oddly similar to the trouble maker that they had encountered earlier, but Sjal didn't want to bring that up.

"Sorry about my little brother. I hear he caused you some trouble earlier," he said with an embarrassed smile.

Sjal giggled and said, "it wasn't a big deal. Raya here took care of him."

He nodded to Raya in thanks.

"That little brat needs to be punished" Raya said "Do better in teaching him." She didn't have patience for kids. She thinks that she always hated them.

"Oh okay then" He said with his mood soured by her response.

"That was harsh I'm sorry. I was participating in the lesson, even though it hasn't been long since I came here. It was a good lesson for myself. Even if I don't succeed in being a good teacher, it will give me significant experience for later, and it will allow me to become stronger."

The problem was that she didn't really know how to go about holding a proper conversation sometimes. She was going to have to ask for help with getting along with people. Something told her she was not the type to put up with bullshit in her past life. She needed knowledge of how to work someone over without making them hate her.

Sjal said, "don't worry about her. She's new and uh… adjusting to the culture. I'll see you around?"

"Yeah, definitely," he said with a forced smile before heading out.

Sjal slurped up her food and said, "well I should be getting back home. Gonna trail a little more then I have more shit to do tomorrow. You want to stay with me? Or are you still staying with my teacher?"

Sjal swung by the shops to pick up some aetherite which she assumed she would be able to put to good use one day. Then she went home and finally tried to get some proper sleep. If Raya wanted to stay over she could. Sjal had moved into a home more fitting for a Shogun so she had more room than she used t o. She only slept for a few hours before she woke up from some kind of noise. She thought something was off... In fact, everything was perfectly normal. The katana were hanging on the wall, her combat outfit was folded on the shelf and the open window looked out onto the still sleeping street. Sjal glanced at the clock, it was late.

"I should check it out," she murmured to herself.

Being used to rude awakenings, she got up, headed to the bathroom and threw some water on her face. She looked at her reflection for a few seconds as the drops of water streamed down her cheeks and nose. She pulled back the shower curtain and began to wash herself. When she was done, she put on clean clothes and her tunic before hanging her two katana on her belt. She noticed at that moment that it was less heavy than usual. She must have gotten used to carrying it and her arm must have gotten stronger.

She walked to Raya and said, "hey, I'm going to do a loop around the neighborhood to see what made that sound."

Sjal began to walk through the streets and alleys of Emberfall. The late night merchants looked particularly tired as Sjal walked. One vendor swept the air with his hand before his gaze met Sjal's. He explained to her that some vandals had taken up residence in this part of town and that they kept bothering him. Sjal put two and two together, that was probably what she'd heard. She normally wouldn't care but if it was going to affect her sleep then it needed to stop.

Sjal listened attentively and when the man had finished his tirade, she put her hand on his shoulder and promised to do something to remedy this. Sjal left the shop and started walking down the street. Time passed but there was still no crime. She scanned every corner, every shadowy area in search of a hypothetical hiding place for a vandal. She had to resign herself to waiting until midnight before something happened and finally came to disturb the peace again.

Raya followed along with Sjal without having anything better to do. Unlike Sjal Raya had slept well and could stay up some more. A group of three boys aged about fifteen arrived in the street. Raya spotted them immediately and did not stop watching them.

First, they approached a fruit stall and looked at the items. Then, as soon as the owner turned his back, the kids grabbed the fruits and threw them to the ground, smashing them. The merchant turned around instantly and screamed at the top of his lungs.

The vandals fled at full speed but Raya said "Let's Go" and followed suit while keeping an adequate distance. They entered an alley. Before entering it, Raya hesitated for a moment. She felt something. She couldn't describe the sensation but she sensed a trap in this alley. Telling herself that nothing ventured, nothing gained, she nevertheless decided to enter it. She then came across a dead end. On the wall were two huge closed trash cans but nothing else populated the street.

"Good catch," Sjal said as she kept pace with Raya. The three young men had vanished. Sjal immediately thought that the vandals had hidden in the trash cans and she approached them slowly. She didn't make any noise but suggested that if they had hidden, it was because they knew they were being followed. At that moment, the three vandals came out of the trash cans accompanied by three other boys of the same age. They rushed at Sjal while holding a single rope in their hands. The Apotheosi took a defensive position but the vandals surrounded her and quickly wrapped the rope around her body. Unable to move, Sjal tried as best she could to free herself. At that precise moment, a man a little older than the others appeared behind Sjal.

"You think you can stop us? Are you kidding me?" he let out a roar that probably woke up the whole block. So much for being subtle.

He stood in front of Sjal and punched her, then again and again.

"I've always dreamed of skewering someone with their own sword." He drew one of Sjal's katana and tried to stab into her. Sjal smirked at the last moment, however, and blinked behind him.

She said, "you fucked up," then drew her second sword and took his head off. She then continued blinking to each of the vandals and slashed into them. She didn't aim to kill those ones, but she wasn't going to take them to a hospital either so the chances were pretty high that they would bleed out.

Sjal turned to Raya and said, "I think we solved this problem."

She was going to portal them both home when she heard someone whimpering in the next alleyway. Sjal ran over and saw someone on the ground with blood dripping from her body and spreading around her body. Probably a victim of the vandals? Or maybe there was another criminal nearby. She approached the girl and felt her pulse to see if the girl was still alive. Seeing that her pulse was weak, she let out a sigh and portalled them to the hospital.

"She was attacked," she said succinctly to the staff and then walked back through the portal to try figuring out if the attacker was still around. She approached the trash cans and opened them one after the other... empty! She then heard a noise coming from a blind spot. She turned around and barely had time to avoid a watermelon that was heading straight for her. In front of her were more criminals. She looked at them neutrally and stared the leader in the eye. She hoped she could give her the beating she deserved.

"Do you not see the bodies I left here?" she asked, "why would you fight me? And are you the ones who harmed that woman?"

They didn't reply, but this time a metal shurken flew at her which she had to blink out of the way to dodge.

Sjal was this time ready to thwart any attack. She also charged at them, blinking to dodge more projectiles. When one of them tried to hit her, she drove her katana into him and looked into his eyes. The expression on her assailant's face when he realized he was going to die for being an idiot was satisfying.

Sjal then struck the next one, knocked him down with a kick to the face, avoided a blow from behind, grabbed onto that hand and sent its owner flying against the wall. Two other vandals tried to trap Sjal between their weapons but she concentrated a dose of aether in her body and blinked above them. She came down on them in quick succession, chopping their arms off.

Now there was only her and the leader of the criminals left. It was against him that Sjal especially wanted to kill. She wanted to show the criminals of Motoku that you don't get to murder with impunity, even though that was hypocritical since she also liked to murder with impunity. She stared at her opponent and tried to decipher his thoughts.

Needless to say the fight didn't last long. Sjal created a portal to the jail and pulled each of the bodies through it. There were about a dozen injured and four dead.

It looked like they were going to grill Sjal and question her, but once they saw that these were people that they'd been looking for for a while, they were fine with her going back home to sleep.

"Finally some goddamn rest," she said as she settled back into bed. She didn't need to be going out to play the hero. Not when she had so much training and fighting to do.
