Jian was alive with a restless energy that caused Raya to feel as though she was floating through another person’s dream. Lines of lanterns reached between the slanted roofs. Many different voices appeared to speak at once.
0.

Raya slipped through the streets as if she had no anchor. She was intangible when she glided over the stones. She was still visible so people moved out of her way puzzled by her presence. Her face seemed to hint at danger without actually looking threatening. It was the tendrils.

Black, curving strands hung loosely around her shoulders moving and shifting as if moved by an invisible breeze. They came up from her back, her neck, and the hollow of her collarbone.

The actual buying and selling happened in a narrow alley off the south market. Not the clean kind, not the silk merchants or the spice traders. A lithe wiry salesman was setting out his vials on a stone counter when Raya arrived.

He glanced up. He gave a half-smile, showing his interest.

“Well, well the night has come to visit my little shop. What brings you to me?

“I’m after something. Maybe only you could get it for me.”

“I have many somethings.”

She moved in a bit to let her tendrils touch the table. There were many options she could choose from but one caught her eye. She pointed to it.

“Alkahest” Raya said.

His smile got wider.

“A connoisseur. I may just have what you are looking for.”

Raya opened the folds of her coat and took out a little leather pouch filled with what was left of her money. There was no need for her to count it. She’d already figured out her finances again and again, taking into account food, a room she hadn’t rented. All she had left was for this.

He chuckled softly in approval and brought out from under the table a vial just as long as his finger.

He looked her in the eye and said “what could a creature like you need with something like this?'

“I will make a weapon”

“Naturally.”

He laughed and leaned back against his stall. He like dealing with people like Raya. Straight forward, honest, entertaining.

“Good luck.”

Raya said quietly “I’ll take my chances” and put the vial away.

She added the alkahest to the dust she got from that strange familiar that had paid her earlier. She was building quite the arsenal of the stuff. It would not be long before she could make a weapon out of it. She needed to find some help, but it was going to be worth it in the end. When she finally finished her weapon, everyone would fear her.
